International tourism to Mazatlán is up over 8% for 2017, and the summer season brought in more than a half-million tourists,

Singled out in a recent Forbes magazine article as one of the most economical places to travel in 2017, Mazatlán is being rediscovered more and more by U.S. and Canadian travelers and has benefited from a resurgence in tourism demand to Mexico. Fueled by an attractive exchange rate, the lure of sun and sea with a depth of culture not as prevalent in other popular Mexico resorts, Mazatlán is becoming Mexico’s latest tourism success story.

“International tourism to Mazatlán is up over 8% for 2017, and the summer season brought us more than a half-million tourists, which is a 13% increase from the same period in 2016 ”, said Marco Antonio Garcia, Secretary of Tourism for the state. Recently, American Express Travel ranked Mazatlán one of the hottest worldwide destinations for Fall and with our new marketing campaign for the U.S. and Canada set to launch next month, Mazatlán is expecting an even more robust winter season. I applaud the collaboration and effort put forth by our tourism and commercial partners to make this happen,” he added.

Through August, 2017, roughly one-and-a-half million tourists have visited Mazatlán, a year-to-year increase of 12%. To respond to this growing demand, Mazatlán is expecting more than a 30% increase in available air seats as a result of increased frequencies from airlines already flying to Mazatlán and new airlines flying there for the first time. This will increase lift from existing markets as well as open up new markets for tourism to the destination. United Airlines recently announced the introduction of nonstop flights from both Chicago and Houston to Mazatlán for the winter season.

Not only is airlift growing, but so is the number of well-known hotel and resort brands such as Holiday Inn with others under construction including Courtyard by Marriott, Radisson Park Inn and the Ibis Hotel near the Convention Center.

Often recalled as a spring break escape, Mazatlán carries a nostalgia for many who have fond memories of fun times and wish to create new stories to share with their family and friends. With the 75-block Historic District of Mazatlán in renaissance, visitors are immersing themselves in history and culture as well as fine dining experiences, art walks, shops and unique arts and crafts. Exploring nearby “Magical Towns” is also a favorite pastime.

“We are seeing young millennials discovering Mazatlán in their search for unique sea and land adventures. The ‘young at heart,’ who recognize the great value of a vacation, and even retirement in Mazatlán, have long called Mazatlán “home,” said Silvia del Carmen Ruiz Coppel, Undersecretary of Tourism for the state. “Families in search of value and a culturally rich learning experience also find Mazatlán ideal, while “foodies” are flocking to Mazatlán for our distinctive and varied cuisine,” she added.
